Tanis C. Thorne,
Ethnohistorian (Ph.D. UCLA, 1987)

Tanis Thorne’s long career as an educator has been devoted to learning about Native Americans and to uncovering untold stories of resistance, agency, and survival. She immersed herself in the complexity of the California Indian experience and made this her research and publication specialization.

A curiosity about the local Indian people in her adopted home, Nevada City, prompted research and the discovery that there had once been a reservation here. Tanis had the great good fortune of meeting polymath Hank Meals about this time. Nevada City Nisenan is the fruit of many years of collaborative research.
